Judiciary blocks government’s move to terrorize mediaNovember 9, 2018
Uttarakhand high court (HC) on Friday, November 2, 2018, stayed the arrest of Praveen Sahni and Saurabh Sahni, two associates of SamacharPlus CEO Umesh Sharma who is currently in judicial custody. Along with Kumar, Praveen and Saurabh Sahni had also been booked for extortion, trespassing and criminal intimidation.
Following this, they approached the high court for a stay on their arrest where the court stayed their arrest. Senior counsel and Supreme Court lawyer KTS Tulsi, who represented them in the court informed media persons that the court has stayed their arrest and said that the “the state government is trying to suppress and terrorise the media.” He also said that the court in its observation made several observations regarding the issue and pointed out that an environment has been made to terrorise media. The government is trying its best not to let the media publish or show whatever is not in their favour.”

Who is Umesh Kumar?
Umesh Kumar, born on December 18, 1977, is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Editor-in-Chief of the regional news channels Samachar Plus. He also heads news agency News network of India (NNI) as its CEO.
A true-blue Delhite, Kumar is an alumnus of the DAV school, Delhi University, the London School of Journalism and National Institute of Business Management.
Interestingly, Kumar never knew that journalism is going to be his chosen path until his six-month-long trip to the United Kingdom, where he pursued his diploma in journalism at the London School of Journalism. “And even since then I knew what my purpose of life is. Earlier I used to dream of being an industrialist, but now I know for sure that bringing out the truth of the messes is what I am meant for,” says the Baron.
After his return from London in 2001, Umesh Kumar headed directly to Dehradun where he made several political acquaintances. During his stay in Dehradun and by the sheer of the stroke of destiny, Kumar met the then Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, a friend of his late father who died in the year 2000, who doted on him like a father figure. In fact, he started his journalistic career under his guidance.
In 2003, he started a news agency, NNI, which provides news to more than 72 national and regional newspapers. In 2006, the group was declared as an official media agency of the government.
However, 2008 turned up to be a breakthrough point in his journalistic career when he did a story against the ruling government of Uttarakhand, which led to the slapping of several criminal cases against him. Not only this, but the government also declared him an absconder and announced a reward of Rs 2500 on him. It also issued a lookout notice against him. However, he fought against the corrupt system and came out clean.
He says, “By the God’s grace everything went well until mid-2010 when I did a story on the Hydro Scam of Uttarakhand”. Actually, Kumar broke a Sturdia land scam story, which took place in Rishikesh and exposed the way in which government land was allotted to private builders for construction of private residential buildings. Later, he also broke a big scam story related to Sravanthi Gas Energy Plant.
Umesh Kumar, a journalist-turned-media mogul of regional channels, laid the foundation stone of the regional Hindi News Channel, Samachar Plus, in 2011. He started this journey with Samachar plus Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Further, he expanded the reach of his establishment by launching SamacharPlus Rajasthan.
Umesh Kumar’s efforts and farsightedness helped the channel to be the best among the regional news channels in terms of TRP (television ration points) and grabbed the second position in the list. Interestingly, this fete was achieved just within two months of the launch of the channel.
Umesh Kumar has an expansion plan of the Samachar Plus network and is planning to launch two regional channels, namely ‘SamacharPlus Madhya Pradesh/Chhattisgarh’ and ‘Samachar Plus Haryana’. He says that these two channels will be aired soon.
Besides, Umesh Kumar is also the CEO of News Agency called News network of India (NNI), Uttarakhand Airways aviation Company and Uttarakhand lions (Golf Team). He is the president of Press foundation of India and is an owner of a Film production house. He is still paving the way of success and creating new stories every day.
The daredevil journalist Umesh Kumar, who has been successful in almost every domain where he stepped in like journalism, sports, cinema and aviation, is the first person from the community of journalists to raise voice against the murder of Rajeev Ranjan, a journalist who was shot dead in Siwan, Bihar. In fact, Umesh Kumar, Samachar Plus, led a team of journalists to Siwan to meet the family of the late RajdevRanjan that too after challenging the person, Mohammad Shahabuddin, a former Rashtriya Janata Dal MP, who is accused of planning his murder.
Rajdev was known for writing against Mohammad Shahabuddin, who is serving a life sentence at present.

In addition, Umesh Kumar has represented India’s national Throwball team as its vice-Captain. He has also represented Uttar Pradesh, seven times, in national games and has been the youngest coach of Uttar Pradesh sub-junior team.
His love towards Golf
He participated in the league by buying Uttarakhand lions Golf team on the high price. The team included well-known players like British open champion Golfer Derren Clark, Thai professional ChapchaiNirate and Indian Open champion Mukesh Kumar & Shankar Das on the highest bid.
He had full confidence and strong conviction on his team and his players had also retained the trust and the underrated team of NNI-GTM Uttarakhand lions had done the miracle, which was unexpected and won the title of Golf premier league 2013 and grabbed the prize money of 2 lacs dollar.
GPL was a franchisee-based golf league, with some of the world’s top golfers in attendance. The league was held in the first week of February 2013 in the picturesque Aamby Valley. To be called Golf Premier League (GPL), the event was co-sanctioned by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and had an IPL-style auction.
His love for India Car Rally
Umesh Kumar, CEO, Samachar Plus, is the winner of the 2nd JK Tyre Constitution Club of India Car Rally for MPs, Bureaucrats, Diplomats and Journalist held in 2011. He was awarded the title of the first place Navigator in the tournament as his team grabbed the first position in the 2nd JK Tyre Constitution Club of India Car Rally for MP’s presented by Aircel for the cause of ‘Save Our Tigers’ held in Taj Palace in New Delhi in December 2011.
Umesh Kumar has tried his hand in the field of aviation and now he is the CEO of Uttarakhand airways (UA). The company provides the aviation services to Religious Sightseeing in Uttarakhand territory. He has also stepped into the Cine world. Under the banner of his production house UV Productions, a film is under production estimated to be released in 2015. The production house is working on another film project as well.
